Dependent Child Sponsorship

1 Program Overview:

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and registered Indians  (at least 18 years old) can sponsor their dependent children (including adopted children) to immigrate to Canada.

2 Sponsor Eligibility:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a Canadian, a permanent resident of Canada, or a registered Indian
  • Resides in Canada (a Canadian citizen living outside Canada can sponsor a relative provided that the sponsor plans to live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.)
  • Sign a sponsorship agreement with the sponsored relative committing to provide financial support if necessary
  • Sign an undertaking (for dependent child the duration is 10 years or until the child turns 25 -whichever comes first, commencing on the day the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident)
  • Be not under a removal order or detained in jail, prison, or penitentiary
  • Be not convicted for committing or attempting to commit a violent offence punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of at least 10 years, unless a pardon or acquittal is received or 5 years have elapsed since the completion of an imposed sentence
  • Be not an undischarged bankrupt or in default of repayment of any debt
  • Be not in receipt of social assistance for a reason other than disability
  • Meet low income cut-off (LICO) requirement for the past 12 months if a dependent child also has a dependent child or children of their own.

3 Key Notes:

  • It's important to prove that there's a genuine parent-child relationship
  • Applicants must declare all family members when applying for permanent residence. A non-accompanying dependent

child who was not declared or examined would not be eligible to be sponsored by the applicant in the future as a

member of the family class because they would be deemed to be excluded.

  • The age of a dependent child, accompanying or non-accompanying, is locked in on the application’s received date.
  • Misrepresentation of a material fact may result in the applicant being inadmissible
  • Length of the undertaking is 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first, commencing on the day the

sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.

4 Eligibility of the dependent child

  • Must be under 22 years of age and not a spouse or common-law partner
  • 22 years of age or older, have depended substantially on the financial support of the parent since before the age of 22 and be unable to support themselves financially due to a physical or mental condition
  • Must not be inadmissible
  • Meet medical examination requirement
  • Have genuine child-parent relationship with the sponsor
