Permanent Resident Card (PR Card)

1. Overview

Canadian permanent resident card (PR card), also referred to as the "Maple Leaf Card", is one of the only documents that allow permanent residents to return to Canada by a commercial carrier. The PR card can only be applied from inside Canada and its validity is usually 5 years.

2. Initial Request, Renewal or Replace

You can apply for the PR card if you:

    • haven't received it within 180 days of your landing
    • it's lost, stolen, or destroyed
    • expired or will expire in less than 9 months
    • you find a mistake on your PR card
    • you legally changed your name and need to update your PR card

2.1 Eligibility:

To be eligible for the PR Card you must

    • Have permanent resident status (to keep your PR status you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last 5 years)
    • Be physically present in Canada
    • Not be a Canadian citizen or a registered Indian under the Indian Act
    • Not be under an effective removal order
    • Not be convicted of an offense

2.2 Application Documents:

    • Photocopy of one primary identity document such as your passport
    • Photocopy of you expired PR card (if your application is for PR card renewal)
    • Your old PR card (if you need to replace your damaged PR card or one with wrong information)
    • Two photos placed in a small envelopes (no staples or paper clips, must meet the photo specifications requirement)
    • Proof of residency requirements (e.g. NOA from CRA)
    • A photocopy of legal name change document (if applicable)
    • Completed and signed application form
    • A photocopy of your birth certificate, school records (report cards, transcripts, attendance records), adoption order or legal guardianship document issued by a Canadian court, if you are under the age of 18
    • Fee payment receipt

2.3 Application Process:

    • Prepare documents
    • Mail the application package
    • Receive the PR card
