Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)


The BOWP lets you keep working while you wait for the results of your permanent residence application. You may be eligible for a BOWP if:

  • you applied for permanent residence
  • your current work permit expires in 4 months or less
  • you have valid status on your work permit
  • you are currently in Canada
  • you have made application for an open WP
  • you are the principal applicant on an application for permanent residence under the FSWP, the CEC, the FSTP, or the PNP, not eligible if the PNP has employment restrictions as conditions of your nomination
  • your application has been found complete or has received a positive eligibility assessment


Application Process:

You can apply for the work permit online or on paper. Usually applications are submitted online. All documents can be scanned, signed, and submitted online.

  • Prepare and scan documents
  • Create online account and pay fees
  • Fill out, sign and date the forms
  • Submit the application
  • Give biometrics (if applicable) and wait for approval
  • Receive the work permit


Application Documents:

  • Application form (IMM 5710)
  • Document Checklist
  • Proof of payment
  • Electronic photo
  • Scans of the information pages of your valid passport (clearing showing the passport number, the dates of issue and expiry, your photo, name and date of birth, stamps made by the Canadian authorities for your entry, any other marked pages)
  • Proof of acceptance into an immigration program application such as the PNP nomination confirmation letter
