Study Permit Application

1.Overview

 The study permit (SP) is a document IRCC issues to allow foreign nationals to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. A study permit is valid for the length of your study program plus, plus an extra 90 days to let you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada except for short-term studies of 6 months or less.

A study permit is not a visa so please make sure you have a visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) before you enter Canada.

You can study in Canada if you:

    • are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
    • prove you have enough money to pay for your:
      • tuition fees
      • living expenses and return transportation for yourself and any accompanying family members
    • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
    • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
    • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires
    • are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI)
